Mark joined the SOB in its inaugural season after several years of playing in non-classical groups, from salsa bands and hip hop symphonies to jazz quintets and free improvising ensembles. He studied jazz and violin at the California Institute of the Arts, culminating in an MFA in Music Performance, and also studied Hindustani violin intensively for two years. In 1999, he founded and produced the String Improvisation Festival in San Francisco, a three day music festival featuring performances and workshops by groups led by innovative string players. He recorded “Ponnichi” with the Japanese jazz quintet Gypsy Swing Project, and performed with them in Japan and at the Sarajevo Jazz Festival. Mark also performs in New York with the GO Organic Orchestra, a large conducted improvising ensemble. He works at an educational technology company and has traveled by bicycle in nine countries.
