Paul Bowles is well known as a novelist (The Sheltering Sky) and sometimes Brooklyn resident (he lived in the storied “February House” with W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, and Gypsy Rose Lee), but it is less known that he was also a gifted composer.

This concert features the diverse artistry of this American cultural icon. Art-song and solo piano alternate with Irene Herrmann’s reminiscences of her musical friendship with Bowles and readings from his letters and other writings. These combine into a rich portrait of Bowles as an author, composer, and friend.

With soprano Carole Blankenship and tenor Chad Kranak.
